• Important Changes to Knife Sale Laws in QLD: What You Need to Know

What Are the New Queensland Laws?

New regulations in Queensland now impact the sale of knives and other controlled items, including some Sterling products.

Certain items, now classified as controlled-secured—such as axes, machetes, swords, and folding pocket knives like the Sterling Nighthawk—can no longer be sold to minors (under 18). These items must be securely stored in locked cabinets or tethered, requiring staff assistance for access.

Retailers must also conduct age checks, provide staff training, and display appropriate in-store signage to comply with these regulations.

Most Sterling knives and blades, including box cutters, scalpels, fishing knives, and utility knives, fall under the controlled category. However, exempt items include shears, snips, secateurs, and replacement blades for box cutters and scalpels.

These laws, effective from 1 September 2024, aim to reduce knife-related crimes, especially among minors, and enhance community safety. They apply to all retailers selling in or to Queensland, including supermarkets, hardware stores, and specialty shops. Non-compliance may result in penalties.

How Will Sheffield Group Support Queensland Businesses?

For controlled-secured products, we have Security Hook Clips and Security Hook Magnets, which can be placed on display hooks in front of products like the Sterling Nighthawk, ensuring safe handling and responsible sales.

Controlled items such as utility knives, box cutters, scalpels, fishing knives and similar blades must have clear signage at each point of sale and the product displays, ensuring proper compliance with the law. Download official signage here.

Black Panther Snips: A Safe and Versatile Alternative

The Black Panther Snips, along with some other Sterling tools, are exempt from these new regulatory restrictions and can be sold freely to customers in Queensland. These snips provide a versatile and safe alternative to knives, handling a wide range of tasks easily. Not only are they exceptionally sharp, but they also offer increased safety compared to traditional knives, making them a reliable and efficient tool for any job.

These high-quality snips are designed for performance, featuring sharp, corrosion-resistant Japanese stainless steel blades. The blades extend the full length of the handle, providing unmatched strength and durability. With serrated edges, the snips can tackle tougher materials effortlessly. A locking clasp and comfortable grip ensure safety and ease of use, while the spring-loaded mechanism enables smooth cuts and helps reduce hand fatigue during repetitive tasks.
